Impact of Short- and Long-Term Exposure to Elevated Seawater P<scp>co</scp>₂on Metabolic Rate and Hypoxia Tolerance in<i>Octopus rubescens</i>

Much of the CO2 released by human activity into atmosphere is dissolving oceans, making them more acidic. In this study we provide first data on short- and long-term impacts ocean acidification octopuses. We measured routine metabolic rate (RMR) Octopus rubescens at elevated pressure (Pco2) with no prior acclimation 1 or 5 wk critical oxygen (Pcrit) after acclimation. Our results show that acclimation, octopuses had significantly higher RMRs in 1,500-μatm Pco2 environments than 700- 360-μatm environments. However, both there was significant difference between differing Pco2, indicating acclimated rapidly to Pco2. for 1,500 μatm observed impaired hypoxia tolerance, as demonstrated a Pcrit those 700 findings suggest O. experiences short-term stress but able acclimate over time. while species may be near-term acidification, compounding environmental effects present physiological challenge species.
